Unless you're lived on your own for a while and have accumulated a lot of housewares over the years you'll probably find that the majority of the things you register for will be for the kitchen.  One of the things I'd recommend is a good cutting board.  You'll want one that has a large enough surface area for large cuts of meat but won't slip from underneath your knife (horror movie images come to mind).  The 
Architec Non-slip Cutting Board has soft feet under the board to help grip the counter.  It might be a good idea to register for two different colored boards (one for meat and one for produce) in order to minimize cross contamination.  These boards come in two sizes: 
11"x14" and 
8"x11".
